It's no big secret that Juventus have had an eye on Werder Bremen playmaker Diego for a while now. Fiorentina have also been rumoured to be interested, but according to La Gazzetta dello Sport Juve's arch-rivals Inter are also following the Brazilian player at the moment.
After failing to sign Frank Lampard from Chelsea last summer, Jose Mourinho's squad was left without probably the most needed reinforcement: a top-quality central midfielder who is just as good going forward as defensively.
With new signings Ricardo Quaresma and Amantino Mancini both flopping miserably, and playmaker Luis Jimenez looking a shadow of the promising player of last season, the coach has had to settle for the likes of Sulley Muntari, Esteban Cambiasso, and Dejan Stankovic, who have a more physical approach to the game.
That's why the Nerazzurri are looking for a creative midfielder, with another Werder player, Mesut Ozil, reportedly also an option. Diego had already been considered by president Massimo Moratti before, but ultimately turned his sights elsewhere because of his overly Brazilian way of playing, i.e. ignoring defensive duties and a chronic inconsistency.
However, his performances over the last two seasons, as well as the recent Uefa Cup matches against cross-town rivals Milan, have made the Inter management change their minds: the birthday boy (he turns 24 today) is now considered good enough for the Nerazzurri's midfield.
